Then, the following day at lunch, an unusual thing occurred, and from all parts of the campus, different groups of students walked without hesitation across the quad. The small act of kindness from one person sprouted immense change throughout the Monroe High…
Thirty years ago, students attending Wahconah Regional High School had a different experience as they went through their normal activities of the year. For example, if a student were to play two sports throughout the course of an academic year, they did not have to pay a sports fee (today that fee is $100). Why is that? The answer is simple. Funding is different because the tax system imposed on the seven surrounding towns.…

We all flooded out of the attic to the sides of the stage, and played with the things there until the first lunch bell rang. All of the students rushed in, grabbing their lunches from the big brown table in the back. When they had all settled down we looked in each of their…
On Friday 10/9, English class was one to remember. Every day besides Wednesdays I have English class and it is defiantly a class to look forward too. My teachers are Mrs. Archabal and Mrs.Wheeler, two of the best teachers in the school that are credible. We call Mrs. Archabal “Arch” and we call Mrs. Wheeler “Wheels”, they don’t mind because mostly everyone at Thayer calls them by their nickname. So, on Friday, we had English class second period…
Thomas Jefferson High School prides itself on individuality and diversity; this is why I can say with confidence that what sets Saranga apart from her peers in English class is her unique ability to remain attentive, cooperative, creative, and positive in all situations. Whether working independently, or with a group, Saranga takes the lead and ensures task or project completion with the highest amount of quality possible. Having a strong work ethic is vital for success and Saranga’s is beyond reproach-- it is contagious to those who are fortunate enough to work with her, as evidenced by her continual high academic performance as she was on Honor Roll throughout her two years at Kilmer Middle School.…
The bell rings again and the day begins. A few class periods go by before any teachers spark up a conversation. By 3rd period the teachers are talking. Mrs. Flo, Mrs. Beth, Mr. Green, Mr. Mathew, Coach Kenny, and Miss Morre all are down the same hall, and we know that these groups don’t mix. Mrs. Beth had paid Mr. Green to grade some of her papers from a few weeks ago, as Mr. Green was returning the papers for an exchange of $35.…
Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…
Throughout my college career, I have had many memorable achievements and gained lots of knowledge on valuable lessons. Yet there are specific lessons and achievements that stand out. Last year, I had the privilege of being asked to join Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society at UCR, which recruits the top 20% of all undergraduate students. By joining and becoming actively involved with the organization, I was fortunate enough to be offered the position of Vice- President of the organization, which is the most meaningful achievement I have had so far.…
Being the youngster in my family I always fantasized about becoming a Registered Nurse. Although it was going to take time and forbearance, I knew that I had to fulfill this fantasy. However, becoming a Registered Nurse is not gonna be facile. It was going to take pleanty of hardwork. In fact, I knew that I had to finish High School.…
Preaching to the Angels “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” This is famous quote from Atticus Finch has been proven true many a time. No one can ever really understand what someone goes through unless they experience it for themselves. Teachers, for example, go through a great deal of trouble sometimes, but most people wouldn’t be able to see that unless they stood in that teacher’s shoes.…
In the American education system, students are judged from an early age whether or not they will ever reach the standards previously placed before them. The expectations for adolescence are ever growing, and after falling behind it is easy for a student to become lost in the world known as “remedial.” Once deemed as such, it becomes nearly impossible to shed said label and become, at best, average. Breaking free from previously set inadequacies and challenging the unknown world of education are goals in which anyone can accomplish. In Mike Rose’s book Lives on the Boundary, he talks about his early years being placed in a vocational course at the secondary school he attended.…
They agreed that they will take turns. After an hour passed, the leader of the class rang the little bell she had. The students were alert and ready to start cleaning up and line…
College students focus on the content presented to the in their courses like understanding the difference between mitosis and meiosis or what exactly Plato meant in his writings. Rarely do students take the time to step back from their studies and analyze the organization of their classes and how that may affect their performance in the course. It is extremely interesting to get a chance to look back on the courses I have taken and analyze their culture rather than content. I will be looking at the dynamics of three different classes, one for each year that I have completed at Xavier, and assessing the influence of each setting on the students. The names of the professors have been changed and I will be using feminine pronouns to refer…
Flinn has some pretty incredible things happening in her classroom, and I’m so grateful that I was able to witness them firsthand. This assignment has definitely influenced what I will do (and not do) in my very own classroom someday. To begin, I want my students to play an active role in their entire educational experience. I think it is important that their input is considered, especially when the rules are established. This gives them ownership and demonstrates their overall commitment.…
