1.There are many social issues that have been influenced by the design of subdivisions. But, it really affects the 80 million Americans who are either too young, too old, or too poor to drive. However, the author says, that there is difficulty to identify a segment of the population that does not suffer in some way from the lifestyle imposed by contemporary suburban development. The list includes, children losing their autonomy, mothers derailing careers for their children, teenagers and adolescents bored and frustrated, elderly unable to move freely about neighborhood and town, commuters are weary, Municipalities are going bankrupt, and Poor having no mobility. The subdivisions have influenced these issues due to the fact that they were poorly designed.
The reasoning behind the poor design, is that these communities were designed around the car and not the pedestrians, which would actually make the community safer …show more content…
There is a major competition between the inner city and suburban life, though I am of the belief that urban development should take a page from suburban developers because they should look at their communities from the outside in. The author believes this because the greatest disadvantage of the city is not its own problems, but the extreme competence and ingenuity of the suburban developer, that consistently raise the expectations of consumers. Suburban life is a well-honed science because it out preforms the city in many categories; amenity package, civic decorum, physical health; their retail management, marketing techniques, investment security, permitting process, and so on. Though cities should learn from suburban life shouldn’t be overshadowed how important the physical distinctions that between suburban and city life. Of all the categories discussed I would believe that in today’s world that the amenity package and physical health are the main concerns on everyone’s mind
