Pip learns that for any relationship to be successful, there must be honesty, respect, and most importantly, communication. Pip experiences this through trial and error with a variety of people. People can only be understood if they express what they want and how they are feeling. Magwitch expresses his love for Pip which makes him feel appreciated. This helps him understand why Magwitch sponsored him and it helps their relationship blossom. When Pip is in love with Estella, although he procrastinates, he tells her how he feels. “‘I know I have no hope that I shall ever call you mine, Estella. I am ignorant what may become of me very soon, how poor I may be, or where I may go. Still I love you. I have loved you ever since I first saw you in this house’” (332). By doing so, they have a mutual understanding of what the other is feeling and can confirm or disregard their previous assumptions. However, this leads to the termination of their relationship; it was toxic and bound to happen. While communication may not make all relationships last, it will weed out the healthy ones from the bad. An authentic relationship, as Pip knows it, is strong communication. Communication clears all confusion, making it crucial to positive and stable relationships.
