KPI boards are utilized to promote safety, quality improvement and cost reductions for the units and the hospital as a whole (Australian Institute of Health Innovation, 2013). The boards are to identify needed quality improvements within the individual units. Then the chief nursing officer along with other key members of upper hospital management round once a week to determine the areas of inefficiency on the units. Managers are responsible for reporting the data obtained and outline how they plan to improve the deficiency. The goals of the KPI program is to assist units to identified deficiencies and to help units to improve and how to take corrective action. The KPI boards measure hospital goals such as average length of stay in the emergency room, falls, monetary waste, and how long it takes to move the patient from the emergency room to the floor once a bed is assigned (Howell, Wills, & Johnston, 2014). The KPI boards are structured to provide a guide for the quality improvements identified as requiring attention. The KPI boards are a tool that is utilized by the organization to measure quality improvements and the results. KPI boards measure quality improvement by using a graphed chart to display how well the QI is performing. The table shows a daily measure of the quality improvement and assesses if the goal or target was met for that day. The KPI boards measure months at a time, and the data is then collected, analyzed, and adjustments to the quality improvement are made if the goal has not been reached. When quality improvement are successfully implemented patients, staff, and the hospital all benefit. When quality improvements fail to be successfully implemented then, the quality improvement is discussed in the situation room or daily management meeting, plans, revisions, corrections and strategies for improved implementation are discussed, and a plan is made for the relaunch. The American college of emergency physicians has reservations when it comes to some of the mandatory quality improvements such as reducing the length of stay in the emergency room (2014). The concern is that something may be missed by the physician due to having time constraints placed upon how long a patient is allowed to stay in the emergency room (American college of emergency physicians, 2014).
