This means to decide which values and goals are the most important to you and then taking the steps to make them happen (Tim Boon, p. 5). When you can set your priorities, then you will have tunnel vision on that goal. All three of these habits are vital to being an effective person because they focus on first the individual. When you are confident in yourself and in what you have going on, then it makes it easy for you to help others when the time is needed. By this, Covey means that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (Prof. Toland, lecture).” When all the other habits are working together then this habit happens. I want to focus on synergy in communication because Covey believes that for this to happen there must be high trust and high cooperation. When there is low trust and low cooperation then there will be defensive communication. Defensive communication is when someone thinks win/lose or lose/win. This is not a part of being an effective person because your win/win mindset is gone and will only lead to something negative. Then there is medium trust and medium cooperation which is better than defensive communication, but it leads to respectful communication. In this case, there is room for compromise and understanding of both parties, but when someone has both high trust and high cooperation then both parties can come to an agreement where everyone is
