By increasing the number and variety of professionals working with one patient, chances of patient complications, outpatient visits as well as mortality rates decreases. “Individual professional(s) involved in a health care team is part of the defences that guard against error. Each individual professional and his or her activity system can be seen as a layer of defence” (Varpio et al, 2008, p.). This representation clearly portrays the importance of inter-professional practice in defending against common medicinal errors. Nurses operate in many diverse fields, from aged care, emergency room care to theatre Nurses. Often times Nurses also work as disease managers, health coaches and community representatives. Midwives have a specialised role in all settings related to birth. They are the leading supporter of women undergoing pregnancy and during labour and work closely with anaesthetists and gynaecologists to improve women’s safety, comfort and overall experience in child birth (England et al, 2012). Midwives role is extended after the baby is born to help with breast feeding and neonatal care during the first month.
