This article made me think there is a two side of the coin while DAP is a current trend follow by the practitioners on the other hand there are critics of it. At this point, I realized that Hatch’s article supports the critics on the File’s article which concerns with applying child development into curriculum. I found interesting the way Hatch puts into words how occurs misunderstanding of the developmental theories in the classroom practice: “If learning via social interaction with more capable others took the place of individual exploration and discovery, then teaching intellectual substance as opposed to facilitating individual development would be much more visible. Teachers would actually be applying knowledge of Vygotskian concepts such as the zone of proximal development in their work.” (p. 3 or 47). In other words, Hatch warns us, if the teacher falsely read the developmental stages or extremely stick to the stages in terms of being developmentally ready, that can limit their teaching practice. In the main time, I wanted to refresh my memory about the Early Childhood Program Standards for the Turkey, which is recently, in 2013, improved by considering the latest studies in the area. Since I was in the USA, I couldn’t use the new version of the program standards, while I am working as a kindergarten teacher. The features of this new program is relatively same as the former one which is child centered and also play-based. Another most important thing is about the program the scholars, who prepared the suggested program, underlined the fact that early child education has not the purpose of teaching the child a specific topic or units. These are the tools that help children to achieve their developmental goals. So far, the most of the kindergarten teachers are following this suggestions and they are not teaching the students how to read and write. So in this case, I daresay if the kindergarten teacher of the US can achieve to close their ears to the expectation of the upper grade teachers, they can utilize an emergent curriculum based on the children’s interest.
