Since the 1930, researches have been studying racial awareness, racial identification and racial preference in young children: both children of color and white children develop a “white bias” by the time they enter Kindergarten” (Banks, 392). Teachers should educate children about racial issues while they are still young and form their own attitudes towards race. From a young age children are taught to think that whites are superior and this leads to self esteem issues. Equal education will exist when teachers change their learning systems into facilitating the academic acclaim of students from different races and gender. Students of color and low-income students can be increased when actives are built on cultural strengths of students. The educational system can help students if they are reformed completely. Instead of coming up with long term solutions to race relations, so far, only quick solutions have been used to pacify the solution. He comes off as product of his environment. As a 70 year old man who wrote this in the early 90’s he lived in a time period where women were not even allowed to vote around the time that he was born. Schlesinger’s problem is not with the theory of multicultural melding, but solely on African American Studies. It was as if he held resentment against the Afrocentric movement and he used multiculturalism as a catalyst to debate against afrocentricity. Schlesinger also mentions that “American is not a nation of individuals at all but a nation of groups that ethnicity is the defining experience for most Americans (Schlesinger). Even if every American ignored ethnicity and ignored their culture we still wouldn’t be individuals. Placing yourselves in groups is a part of human nature, and in people would just find another way to classify themselves. Gender, sexuality, religion, political ideologies,and class would still be groups that people would associate
