Students should be penalized for doing this because it can cause them to fall behind in class study causing them to lower their grades. Another con to having students use their cell phones in class, is that they could be using it for cheating. Many students do not think twice about having their cell phones in their pockets, and many classes are big enough where students may feel as if they would never be caught cheating with their phone. However, if students are using their phones at the appropriate times, like for research or other educational purposes, then they should not be penalized, as long as the professor allows it. In addition, challenging the instructor on their knowledge of the subject should require students to be penalized as well.
