Washington was one of the staple black individuals of the time who also served as an advisor to presidents. The introduction of Booker T. Washington is what allows DuBois to segway into an economic viewpoint concerning why the “color-line” will be the problem of the nineteenth century, and why black unity is needed to excel. Unlike DuBois, Washington explicitly expresses that African-American should focus on achieving economic advantages and the accumulation of wealth, rather than striving to achieve political power, civil rights, or higher education. As DuBois expresses however, the downfall of this plan lies in the previously mentioned fact that black America does not understand the inner workings of the country. In a still racially divided America, the reality of another Booker T. Washington figuring arising, or the talented tenth theory succeeding purely through black business, or an African-American rising up through the ranks of white business seems highly unlikely.
