Getting baptized doesn’t guarantee you are a good Christian. The act of getting baptized does not come with anything but a title and just more of a reason to call yourself a “good” Christian. “Baptism is a rite which thereby calls for divine protection. This brings to mind that Christians saw baptism itself as a “seal” marking ownership, but which also provided protection against evil.”4 In this quote the ““seal” marking ownership”, referring to a title, the outsiders just see it was not true faith, but a reason to call someone something. Just dunking your head under water while making a promise says nothing unless you act upon it. Most outsiders think that a symbolic “rebirth” is pointless and unnecessary, if faith is the goal in the end. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.”5 Even here any outsider could argue that faith in Christ, if true faith, is what God is looking for, not the act or work of baptism. Living a Christ like life entails living in Christ example. Yes Christ got baptized, but that is part of his works, and he commanded us that faith is the key to being Christ like. To an outsider baptism is just an outward symbol that portrays faith, but is not faith in its entirety. Just an act does not prove what you have faith in your heart, only God can truly tell your intentions.
