Having perhaps a greater impact on the industry than the radio, this medium would be the key to the ultimate success of alternative bands. Since both televisions and radios could be within the American household, their abilities of intimacy and immediacy were increased dramatically. Everyone who loved this music and its message could see it and hear it when they wanted to, within the comforts of their own home. MTV, a television network, provided the catalyst for extreme change through their broadcasts of alternative music videos (819). Through a pedagogical standpoint, this broadcast will teach audiences, in simple terms, why alternative rock is important. The whole genre is reminiscent of a time when emotions such as anger, passion. and love overtook all else. The feelings that arose from war and conflict transitioned into a musical language that people of all ages could identify with. Those struggles still exist in every generation, which is why alternative music has the power to speak to people today the same way it did in the 1980’s. Society has always been shaped by the masses, and the overwhelming response to alternative music is evidence of that. There was an important change in the way music was perceived. Alternative artists began as societal outcasts who were too grungy and idealistic for record companies to appreciate (H30). As time went on, and more local radio stations began accepting the new style, people recognized its unique significance.
