According to Erik Erikson, at this age a child is in a stage that he titles “Industry vs Inferiority”. These children have strong connections with their peers which makes birthday parties very desirable. It will start to be seen that ten year olds will start to gain more independence and develop interpersonal relationships. This causes a shift in who the child will spend their time with. You will see them start to spend more time with their friends in groups that they have formed either through school or activities, and less time with family members. They tend to strive to master skills, accomplish tasks, and compete and they take great pride when this things are accomplished. Piaget looks at the cognitive development of these children and states that children from the ages seven to eleven years old are in the concrete operational stage. In this stage of cognitive development, children are now able to see things from other peoples’ views. This helps them understand the cause and effect of their actions and see how their actions affects others. They will start with one clue that will lead them to the next and at each stop they will have to solve the riddle on the card. This is a great way to work on teamwork and concrete thinking as they take the ideas that are on the cards and apply them to real objects. For example one card says “Love is an open….” The children will complete these lyrics with the word “door” and then the next clue will be found one a door.
