In addition, the economy was crashing and there was widespread violence and chaos across the country, everyone was seeking some form of stability in Italy. This led to the formation of the National Fascist Party, which was created by Mussolini and his followers. With the use of extensive propaganda Mussolini spread his message. The Blackshirt’s which was Mussolini’s militia’ staged an armed March on Rome to challenge the Italian government. Rather that supporting the governments they opposed it altogether. This led to King Emmanuel III to give up his position to Mussolini, who in turn used his power to eventually form a Fascist dictatorship. Germany and Japan had developed an Anti-Comintern Pact of 1936 which was basically designed as a way to prevent communism. This pact was extended to Fascist Italy in the year 1937. Another significantly powerful totalitarian state in Europe, was the Soviet Union, which was controlled by Joseph Stalin. Joseph Stalin was the successor of Vladimir Lenin, who passed away in 1924. Stalin had developed a cult of personality, this essentially means that people saw Stalin as a person who could do no wrong or harm to the state. In the year 1936, Stalin really wanted to have full control over the Soviet Union. He used show trials which were used to gain more power and support for Stalin. These were radical trials which were filled with false information and the total death count from these trials was about 680,000 and another million died in the Gulag. As you can see Stalin was a filled with paranoia, which led him to kill so many of his own men.
