Genesis 1:26 states, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” You see, most people get stuck on the word image and complete miss the word likeness. I would like to elaborate on this word to show the importance this the term in regards to the image of God. Likeness can be defined as “the semblance, guise, or outward appearance of”; this is what most people think about when they read verse 26 of the first chapter of Genesis. However, if one only concerns themselves on the outward appearance factor of being made in God’s image I believe they completely miss the entire point. One must believe that when it is said that humans are made in the image of God, it is to recognize the unique characteristics of human nature which allows God to be made manifest in humans.
