But as time goes on opinions change and that’s how people are able to come to their own conclusions. In The Help, a white woman by the name of Celia hires Minny, a colored woman, as a maid. But they become close to friends, Celia was raised in Sugar Ditch, a poor community and could relate to Minny since she was excluded from the White community because of her previous status. Minny was told growing up and experience that White people treating her poorly because of her color that she assumed Celia would treat her too. Once Celia attacks the white man to protect Minny, Minny finally realized that Celia isn’t like the White woman who will treat her poorly, “[she saw] the white-trash girl she was ten years ago. She was strong. She didn’t take no [nothing] from nobody.” (Stockett 365). As Mae Mobley enters schools she questions why some people are white and some are black. Mae Mobley questions she teacher, “Miss Taylor says kids that are colored can’t go to [her] school cause they’re not smart enough.” (Stockett 461). Aibileen asks Mae Mobley if she thinks that Aibileen is dumb and Mae Mobley says no. Mae Mobley is starting to be exposed to more negative view on colored people, she grew up with maid her whole life and probably cares for Aibileen more than her mother.
