Gatsby’s death scene contains many diegetic sounds combined for example, the splashing of water, gunshots, a butler talking, Caraway talking and Gatsby himself. These sounds are heard by various characters in the scene. Some were very loud like the gunshots and Caraway’s yelling. And some were soft like Gatsby’s whisper. We know that Wilson shot himself after he killed Gatsby, we do not see this gunshot but hear it simultaneously with the splashing of water. Through the diegetic sound we receive more information about the scene which makes it very effective (Stripek, 2014).These sounds enable the audience to connect with not only the story but with the characters and their emotions too.
