A chairman of the powerful VC group Sequoia Capital, an investing company, recently said his firm is not prepared to "lower its standards to invest in women." Scrolling through the Sequoia website revealed that out of the 33 companies they are invested in only three have women CEOs and those three had male partners. Women are not given nearly as many opportunities to be leaders of big companies. Women hold only 14.3% of the top five leadership positions in top companies. Out of 500 companies, there were only 24 female CEOs. Why does this matter? It matters because we need to change in how we do things. There should be more fairness in the workforce and less discrimination. When men were asked if their workplace provided equal opportunities 83% said yes compared to 59% of women. One in three women say they are treated differently than their male counterparts, and most say it holds them back. People have also taken the fact that women may have to take maternity leave as a reason to not hire her, but that's rubbish.
