In the book one of the most important aspects of Jeannette’s life was the social factor and how a social life works when you don’t stay in one place long enough to keep friends. Unfortunately the movie was lacking this component to the story which I think made the movie less interesting. Jeannette had been beaten up everyday on her way home for a while. This was never mentioned in the movie, If I was beat up it would have been a big part of my life and it is a important representation of how hard her social life was. Another social factor in Jeanette's life that was not mentioned in the movie was that everyday during lunch she would do homework so that people wouldn't notice that she did not have any food. This stuck me hard because When I used to not eat lunch I also did that, but it was a voluntary action that I was doing, but for Jeannette she had no choice. The movie did not talk much about her schooling life and how she was put in special education when she had a different accent. For example, Rosemary got a pay check and tried to keep the money to not let Rex get it. She hid the money in the sock and game it to Jeannette, but Rex knew what was happening and took the sock. Rosemary just sat there and didn't try to do anything else. This took a toll on Jeannette because she didn't see anyone trying to help her and the one person that could have helped didn't. Also Rex came home all the time late at night drunk, and he would make a huge mess and break plates and vases. After a while the whole family just accepted that Rex was not going to stop, so they just cleaned up for him and the next day ex would have no recollection of the incident. Another section of the story line that the movie did not show was the week the Jeannette was in charge of the money. Rosmery was away and had told Jeannette to not give Rex any money. Unfortunately, Jeannette did not know how to say no to her dad. And when Rex asked for money and she said yes he kept going back. That whole week they were low on food because he kept taking the money. Jeannette has gone though the whole dad taking money fiasko before, when Jeannette and Lori had filled their get away from the parents piggy bank, Rex found it and took all the money. They had been saving up from
