Everyone in the community was shocked and was wondering what was going on since they're so exact and perfect in everything that they do. The chief of elders then announced that Jonas was to be the new Receiver of Memories, which is the most honored job of all. This is because Jonas receives memories from previous times in history that were outside of the community at some point, and this experience includes some major emotional and physical pain. When he received his rules, he saw that he was allowed to lie, since he is not allowed to tell others about his training. This was unusual to him because he had never lied and it was against the rules. One day, as Asher, Jonas’ best friend, and Jonas were tossing an apple to improve Asher's coordination, Jonas realized the apple had somehow changed. He couldn't quite describe it but later we realized he had experienced a small taste of the color red. I believe she tells about the courage, love, and compassion that Jonas expresses throughout the book toward the Giver and Gabriel. For example, Jonas showed great courage when he modified the plan of escape to take Gabriel with him to avoid his certain death. This was very brave of him to do for he could've got caught easily, and he also had to take in consideration that he now had to take care of himself and Gabriel on his long and peril journey. Another lesson that the author gave us was when Jonas started to show love and compassion for the Giver and Gabriel. When Jonas received the wonderful memory and the feeling of love, he grew to love others. This created a huge impact on him, and to others. His love and compassion for Gabriel were one of the main reasons as to why he took him with him. Of course, Jonas did not want the child to die, after all, the nurturing and care he gave to him. He wanted Gabriel to be safe and protected from harm, which is something people would feel for the people they love and care
