When the majority of people think about the Crusades they usually think of war and aggression, where Christians were inspired to go to war against Moslems to gain wealth and territory. While some crusaders may have had these dreams, this is not accurate. The written Hypothesis for this essay will be ‘The crusades were more about religion then religion than territory.’ There are three main reasons why the crusades were more about religion than territory. Well, this is exactly what happened to the Moslems and Christians. Christians were followers of Jesus Christ and Moslems were followers of Mohammed, who both happen to have something to do with Holy land and Jerusalem in particular. As Mohammed rose to heaven in Jerusalem and Jesus was born in Jerusalem. (Gibson, 1975). These facts are just more religious examples of things that would of lead to the start of the Crusades. As the two religions both believed two different things and these two different things were involved and happened in the same place. Given that both religions had something sacred to do with the holy land, would have made it quite confusing between the two religions because neither would have believed what the other religion believed, therefore they would have thought that the Holy Land was theirs and should be ’owned’ by them and only them. Leaving even more religious reasons to why the crusades were started and fought. Overall, the two main religions involved in the crusades (Moslems and Christians) only got involved in the beginning because they both believed that the holy land (Mainly Jerusalem) was important and sacred to their religion and only their religion.
