Although there are many benefits to using this energy source and although is it not widely adopted in the United States it is the third biggest source of electricity in the country. For instance, only about 20% of energy in the United states is generated by the use of nuclear plants (Hyndman 335). It is known that one of the benefits of nuclear energy is the fact that it is environmentally friendly, but there is also a number of disadvantages that come with it, which is why a lot of individuals do not think it is the best resolution and they therefore stick to the burning of fossil fuels. Compared to the burning of fossil fuels, using nuclear energy to manufacture electricity is much costlier. In Natural Disasters & Hazards it says that, “It costs about 10 cents per kilowatt-hour with the use of nuclear energy, as opposed to the cost of using natural gas which is only about 4 cents per kilowatt-hour” (Hyndman 334). The cost is more than half, not to mention that the production of these nuclear plants is very expensive and has in the past cost even more due to failures which then adds cost when those failures are fixed. Price is not to only reason that this procedure is not widely practiced, but it sure is one of the biggest arguments against …show more content…
People have wanted to revolutionize the supply of electric energy for a long time. There was a poll made in 1988 in which, “81 percent of the American public believed that nuclear energy was important in order to meet the United States’ energy needs in the years ahead” (Wallis 723). This attests that over three fourths of the American people agreed that nuclear energy would be essential in order to provide enough energy for the growing need for electricity. Not only did citizens believe that nuclear energy was better for the environment, but as a result of fossil fuel’s exhaustibility they believed that the amount of energy generated by the burning of coal would eventually run out or not be enough to fabricate enough for the country’s population. Coming to the conclusion that nuclear energy may be the solution to that
