The common drugs that facilitates “date rape” are: flunitrazepam (Rohypnol), gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), and ketamine. In popular culture these drugs are referred to as roofies, liquid ecstasy, and “special k”, respectively (“What is rape and date rape?,” 2009). These drugs are known to facilitate date rape due to their lack of color, smell or taste which make it difficult to detect especially in dark-colored drinks or in a dark atmosphere (“What is rape and date rape?,” 2009). The effects of these drugs include, but are not limited to, altering one’s ability to be in control, causing one to feel very weak and dazed, and bringing about amnesia (“What is rape and date rape?,” 2009). As stated previously, “one in four college aged women is date raped or experiences an attempted date rape” (Koss et al., 1987). That being said, many women and men in our college community have been affected. Someone who has gone through this terrible incident speak out will, in hopes, shed light on how degrading this violence is and how it can happen to anyone. A public advocate will have the ability to reach the ears of thousands of college students. The speaker will illustrate how such occurrences can leave an impact on a person forever; whether it be the victim or the perpetrator. It should be implemented at all universities and campuses that students attend a mandatory presentation on date rape, and learn the importance and break the social boundary to talk openly about this issue. Once the presentation has ended, there would be an open discussion to follow up with the students. This two-step process of having an individual speak out on the issue and have the audience converse together enables the students to know the consequences as well as creating an open environment to talk about the issues associated with date rape. They will be able to hear what the victim has gone through and how traumatizing this experience can be, they will also learn some preventive measures to stop the event from progressing if it is
