George has been responsible for Lennie for a long time, and this has shaped him as a person. He does this by first describing his small physical state, but then going on to show that he was the one that others depended on to protect them. George is not much of an obvious part of establishing the theme of being set back because of something that is out of your control because of the fact that he is not weak character, but he does have an obvious disadvantage. Having Lennie around is not something George chose, and, to him, not something he could choose to get rid of. The author also starts to establish from the beginning that their dream would never be possible because of how unpredictable Lennie was.
