“In the United States, researchers estimate that 40%–50% of all first marriages, and 60% of second marriages, will end in divorce.” (Divorce.usu.edu) America seems to have the highest divorce rate of any country in the world. It seems that in today’s world divorce is bound to happen. What is causing such a high divorce rate, and is there anything that can be done to help lower it? There are eight leading causes of divorce in this country and all seem to be somewhat linked together. Young age is the number one leading cause of divorce in America. Inside each of those factors are other underlying issues that can cause more problems that lead to divorce. “A recent national survey found that the most common reason given for divorce was “lack of commitment” (73% said this was a major reason). Other significant reasons included too much arguing (56%), infidelity (55%), marrying too young (46%), unrealistic expectations (45%), lack of equality in the relationship (44%), lack of preparation for marriage (41%), and abuse (29%).” (divorce.usu.edu). With these reasons given it seems that every one of the reasons falls into one of the categories listed from the eight factors above. It seems that with all of these causes of divorce it will be hard to maintain a marriage in today’s world. Dr. Scott Stanley defines commitment as “Having a long-term view of the marriage that helps us not get overwhelmed by the problems and challenges day to day. We keep our eyes focused on the valued prize—a healthy, stable marriage—and work to get there.” Commitment plays such a big role because without it the two in the marriage will drift apart.
