They are carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane. Carbon dioxide generates over 55% of the greenhouse effect. It comes from fossil fuel use such as natural gas, coal and oil. A small part comes from industrial processes. An example of this is cement production. The making of cement involves the burning of fossil fuels and one of the leading causes of pollution which increases the greenhouse effect. Nitrous oxide is another greenhouse gas that increases the effect of global warming. The reason for the increase is mainly due to our population. People have been adding fertilizers that have been enriched with nitrogen to our yards and farmland. It is then absorbed by water or leaked into river oceans. Animal and human waste will also produce nitrogen that is leaked into our water supply. Scientist’s state climate change is “the biggest global health threat of the 21st century.” This impacts everyone especially the elderly, children, minorities and low-income communities. Air pollution gets worse with rising temperatures. This is created when pollution from factories, cars and other sources react to heat and the sun. The main component of smog is ground-level ozone. The hotter things get, the more greenhouse gases we get. Humans are not the only ones that face challenges. As sea and land make rapid changes, the animals disappear if they don’t adapt quickly. Many ocean, freshwater and land species are moving to cooler areas, to escape warming. They are changing migration patterns and seasonal behaviors and still going extinct. Vertebrate species with backbones such as birds, fish, amphibians, mammals and reptiles are disappearing at a much faster rate than years
