Alternatively, the court may sentence the defendant to perform between 30 and 120 hours of community service. If the alleged threat is bad enough, a person can be charged with aggravated assault, which is a Class 4 felony depending on the circumstance of the threat, which could get you one to three years in prison and a fine up to $25,000. An aggravated assault charge could also potentially be a Class 3 felony, which would get you two to five years and a charge up to $25,000. Not every threat counts as an assault, and assault charges can be defended. For example, you may not committed assault if you were acting in self-defense, or coming to the defense of someone else. You may also be able to defeat an assault charge if you were defending your property, (e.g. if you were pick pocketed or your purse was snatched).
