According to the Texas Tribune, Texas is the highest in the nation in uninsured households. The Texas Tribune also shows that in almost all counties that run along the border, most of them fall in the 30-40 percent uninsured category. To me, that is highly disturbing. I definitely take my insurance for granted, writing this has really shed light on how blessed I truly am. To think about not having insurance to cover costs of various things that are vital to human life is terrifying. As mentioned earlier, I believe all of these issues are connected and one problem leads to and affects another. All of these problems root back to money. Money is a big reason that so many people across the border are living uninsured. Another factor to consider is this, its not secret that there are several undocumented immigrants living along the border. It’s entirely possible that these undocumented immigrants will ignore having insurance in an effort to remain incognito. One border county in Texas that stuck out is Hidalgo. According to the Texas Tribune, Hidalgo county has a population of nearly 700,000. Of those 700,000 nearly 300,000 are uninsured. Money runs the world we live in today. As defined by the United States Department of Health and Student Services, the poverty line for an individual is $11,770 and $28,410 for a family of five. Without money, life would undoubtedly be hard. The USDA states that 85 percent of counties with the highest poverty rates are located in rural America. Along the border many of these families and individuals are having to bring in income on their own agriculturally due to the lack of urban work opportunities in that area. Financial hardship brings with it a plethora of problems. As we’ve discussed, without money makes it extremely difficult to have insurance. In turn that contributes to poor health. Lack of adequate finances can also contribute to raising crime rates simply because people are beginning to get more desperate.
