Just as drugs have positive effects on the body, they also have various nasty side effects. Beta Blockers are used to lower athlete’s heart rate and stress yet can cause headaches, muscle and stomach cramps, nausea, blurred vision, and fatigue; a number of things that would incidentally raise one’s stress and heart rate. Drugs have negative short term and long term effects on the consumer’s health; these long terms effects taking effect because the athlete desired victory in a short term sporting competition. Drugs do give an unfair advantage to either side of a playing field. Athletes do not take drugs to level the playing field, they take it illegally to gain an advantage and therefor, cheat. They take them because they desire to win no matter the cost. If drugs became legal, athletes and their competitors would not only compete in sport, but compete in their dosage to gain the higher advantage, staring a vicious cycle that would end in over dosage. They eliminate sportsmanship and create tension between players. There is no respect in sport involving drug abuse. Fans are strayed away from sport games and athletes are seen as fake cheats and no longer role
