Online misinformation has convinced some people that vaccinations lead to long term effects and diseases such as Alzheimer’s and autism. Vaccinations work with the immune system so it can help fight a disease or virus. When a virus enters the blood stream, they advance and reproduce which turns into a flu. The infection enables the sicknesses and the body’s immune system has the role of fighting the infection. When the infection has been beat, our body recognizes it to protect itself from that disease in the future. The purpose of these is to help develop stronger immunity by duplicate a infection, but this infection does not cause illness. The purpose of this is to help the immune system develop the same response as it would to a real infection which allows our bodies to recognize the infection. Mandatory vaccines can be a scary, not having a choice leads to questioning. Paul Offit, a pediatric professor and director of the vaccine education center at children’s hospital of Philadelphia said “Why isn’t it a matter of parental choice? This is a dangerous game to play” Many are questioning the chemicals of vaccines with discredited theories of it linking to autism. Although vaccinations are still widely used there are anxieties many parents have about vaccines associating with autism. A hypothesis mentioned by the clinical infectious diseases said that the combination of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine can damage intestinal lining which is one factor out of 3 of this hypothesis that led to symptoms of autism. Another case written by Andrew Wakefield in The Lancet describes cases of 8 children receiving symptoms of autism after 1 month of taking the vaccine. These children all had gastrointestinal symptoms from the vaccine which he considers to be a contribution that lead to the disease. These cases convinced Wakefield that MMR vaccines caused a chain reaction that led to the symptoms of autism. Although these cases showed some linkage the case did not include control subjects which didn’t make his hypothesis creditable. Could it have been a coincidence? No evidence has been proven.
