One line states, “But that which was most sad and lamentable was, that in two or three months’ time half of their company died, especially in January and February, being the depth of winter.” This passage shows that when they were actually trying to create their new world, they were actually just killing themselves because of the cold, thus making the nightmare more real. There were times were two or three people in a day that would die, and eventually only 50 people remained after two or three months. Their dream was becoming a nightmare. When they were trying to create this perfect place, they only ended up killing off families, with people dying everyday for two months. This seems to me more like a nightmare than a dream, since there were families torn apart everywhere because of death happening everywhere. Also, there were many people that were dying because of people who had diseases or illnesses, which they did not have the medicine to cure it. There was starving people everywhere trying to live only to tomorrow, not trying to live until there utopia was created. Instead of creating a dream for them, they created a nightmare that caused a lot of death to friends, family, and colleagues. During the 1960’s, many young people left home to go and join these communes, but this would come back to harm them. These communes had their own laws that they came up with, so when they had to return to society when their jig was over, they had a hard time adapting back to society. This was the American nightmare because all of the people who were in these communes had trouble adapting back to their “normal” life with lots of rules and regulations on what they can do. They were used to laws that were more relaxed, so when they had to return to society they had a harsh reality that this would be the life they live now. This was a nightmare because they tried to create a dream with their communes, but when they came back to “reality” they had a tough time getting jobs and starting a life again.
