The first habit discussed in the book is being proactive. According to Stephen Covey the first step to being proactive is to look at your self in your own mirror. This does not mean you have to be pushy or aggressive, but you need recognize your responsibility to make things happen. Focusing your energy and time on problems that you have control over is another way to be proactive. There are problems that you may face that you have absolutely no control over, worrying about these problems will only cause you frustration. I would consider myself a reactive person at times. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has given me some ideas to make myself proactive. I know that throughout my life I will face some difficult ad trying situations. I want to think about my response to a situation before I react to it. When faced with a bad situation I need to react in a proactive way. I also need to take initiative in my life. There are too many times when I am waiting on someone else’s move before I make my own. I need to step up and let people know I am there. At times in my life I let problems consume me. This habit is about renewal and it is the habit that makes habits one through six possible. The four dimensions of renewal are physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual. The physical dimensions focuses on the health of our body. The core of your life and your value system is part of the spiritual dimension. The mental dimensions are more than what you learn in school. To renew your mental dimensions, you must take action outside of school. Covey says that reading literature is a great way to renew tour mental dimension. The last dimension, social/emotional, is based on empathetic communication, interpersonal leadership, and creative cooperation. Renewing this dimension is something you can do in your everyday activities. Habit seven was my favorite habit. College has been a difficult time for me and I have let my life get out of control. I am ready to take control of my life and renew it. I am going to make a list of task that can help renew my four dimensions. I learned that eating healthy is hard to do in college. I find myself feeling ill and tired due to what I have eaten. I need to take the time to worry about what I am putting into my body and make sure it will have a positive impact on my physical dimension. My spiritual dimension has taken a hit during college.
