He starts to show a little bit more trust and kindness towards Mrs. Jones. Mrs. Jones still doesn’t let Roger go. On page 1, it says, “‘Then I won’t turn you loose,’ said the woman.” She takes him back to where she lives and cleans him up. She asks him questions while she feeds him. She asks him why he tried to take her purse and why he was so dirty. Roger tells her that he doesn’t have anyone at home to clean him up and he wanted to buy a new pair of shoes and he didn’t have any money. He starts to become more comfortable with Mrs. Jones because she is showing him that she cares about him and will take care of him.
Toward the end of the story, Roger is more comfortable with talking to Mrs. Jones. He is starting to have a conversation with her. On page 2, it says,”’I were young once and I wanted things I could not get,’”Mrs. Jones relates to Roger and tells him stories from when she was his age. She shows him that he isn’t the only one that has to go through difficult times in life. Roger considers this and feels even better about communicating with Mrs. Jones. He has the opportunity to run out the door, but instead he stays. This shows that Roger feels safe with Mrs.
