It is important to make the most of each visit with the learner, if it is not possible to complete a formal assessment, it should be possible to complete an informal assessment though observations etc. It is also important to give regular feedback to ensure the learner feels supported, encouraged and aware of where they are in their qualification. Any concerns you may have regarding work not being completed for instance can also be mentioned in feedback although it is important for the feedback to be as positive as possible. Negative comments can have a negative impact on the learner and therefore I tend to use the ‘sandwich approach’ when giving feedback by giving one positive comment, followed by any development/ issues, and ending with another positive comment.
It is important we follow the assessment process which starts with the initial assessment – goes on to assessment planning- followed by assessment activity- assessment decision and feedback and ending with review of progress.
