Young men are being kidnapped by militia regimes and forced to join combat. Communities are being raided and bombed, and extremists are persecuting any person who does not conform to extremist Islamic methodology. Refugees are caught between the certain death of giving a smuggler all their money to make the dangerous journey to refuge across the Mediterranean sea, and the certain death of remaining in Syria. Refugees are fleeing to neighbouring nations such as Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq, but those nations have begun to close their borders as their economies and social structure are unable to cope with such a large influx of refugees in such a short period of time; “Jordan is running out of water. Already one of the world’s driest countries, the Kingdom faces a crisis badly exacerbated by the increasing needs of those displaced by Syria's Civil War.” This is the reality for many European Nations, such as Greece, which is already ongoing an economic crisis as deep as the Great Depression. Hundreds of thousands of refugees have attempted to make the dangerous trek across to Mediterranean sea, but those who make it all the way to Greece are confronted with starvation, no shelter and no opportunity to begin rebuilding their lives. The Conservative government is still making a legitimate effort to help appease the conflict in both refugee support, military intervention and political policy. Financially, “Canada has committed over $810 million in humanitarian, development and security assistance in response to the Syria crisis”. They have also created a Syrian Emergency Relief Fund, of which all donations made by the general public until the end of 2015 up to and including $100 million, will be matched by the Canadian Government. Aside from financial contribution, Canada has imposed sanctions against Syria including the complete ban of importing, exporting and investing in the Syrian economy in any way, with the exception of food and humanitarian effort to encourage the regime to act in accord to international policy. Canada continues to put extensive pressure on the international community to rise up and meet this humanitarian crisis in any way
