To begin with, the purpose of symbolism adds more meaning and depth to a storyline. It sort of acts like a webbing between the theme and story. Themes alone can be a bit moralistic and a story can just be simplistic. Symbolism brings these two together. For example we see that the grandmother's hat plays a role as a symbol. This hat is used to represent her as a lady. Now its important to understand the point of view in short stories. Point of view in a story allows us to see and hear about what is going on. In this case, this story is told in third person focusing mostly on the grandmother. She is the only character point of view we can focus on. This leads me to another story element which is characters. Character’s …show more content…
The plot is very important. This is an element used to describe the events that make up a story. A plot can be used to focus the reader’s attention on the important character’s and their role in the story. A plot has five main elements. One in particular which would be the climax. Now to me the climax in this story would be about the seven pleases, “Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?” on page 593. This is an intense moment in the story. This makes us think if the situation will escalate into something bigger only if their server had not interrupted with their drinks. Another important element would be symbolism. Symbolism relates to imagery sort of. It gives us reader’s some meaning that goes beyond of what is literally being said. For instance, the train station would be a symbol. The train station might be representing the paths that the couple are trying to take for their own live’s. Now for the third element which would be the setting. This lets us know the time of where the story is taking place. This helps set the mood or tone. This story takes place at a train station letting us know that this couple are either heading somewhere together or not. One of the themes I found in this short story was about choices. In this short story this couple faces a difficult situation with the woman’s pregnancy. But in this case one …show more content…
I would use the story as a symbol. I personally notice that the story requested by the father represents the situation he is facing how he is dying and its not going to be easy and happy for him and his daughter. Conflict is important because it provides the fundamental materials for the building of the plot. Its goes well in this short story and builds up curiosity and excitement. In “A Conversation with My Father” the conflict begins when the daughter’s story does not end with a tragic ending that bothers her father when she cannot accept tragedy like him. Having characters in a story make it more interesting. Without characters you would not have a story to make up the conflicts. There are two main characters which are the daughter and the father. To me I see the daughter also known as the narrator as the protagonist and the father as the antagonist. The father is eighty-six years old dying in his death bed having his last conversation with his daughter. The daughter is briefly explaining her father’s past life, present situation, a few of his actions. One theme in my opinion this story’s main theme is accepting of life and death. Everyone should accept the fact that people’s lives do come to an end. In this story the father asks his daughter to write him a story as a last and final request. She tries but the father is not satisfied with the storyline she presents to him. “You
