William C. Rhoden in “Seeing Through the Illusions of the Sports Hero” explores the concept of sports heroism and the characteristic elements that describe it — “emotion … propaganda … hypocrisy … [and] tragedy.” I find it interesting that sports athletes are revered for their perfection and simultaneously, condemned for mistakes. I feel as though we are back in the times of Ancient Egypt, where the Pharaohs are considered divine Kings for as long as the Nile and the land surrounding it prospers. Should a calamity persist (i.e. drought), the Pharaoh is overtaken and replaced. Similarly, in the context of sports heroes, it is as if humanity has forgotten that to be human is to make mistakes.…
Method This study investigated how officials (the referee, assistant referees and the fourth official) in English football were/have been portrayed in newspapers, between 17 October 2015 to 17 January 2016. Only Premier League teams were analysed but included their matches in other domestic competitions (The FA Cup and The Capital One Cup). When one (or both) Premier League teams were competing in a cup competition the match was recorded, however when neither team was a Premier League club, the match article was ignored. Only cup matches involving Premier League teams were analysed; including two Premier League teams in a cup competition, or one Premier League and one non-Premier League team in a cup competition (however two non-Premier League…
The opinion piece, “The Athletes as Agent of Change,” by Lonnie Bunch and David Skorton discusses how many athletes have done a many of gestures, that portray the idea that certain people are not treated equally in the United States. I believe that athletes should use their fame to promote a political agenda, because they can get the word out to all of their fans, and post the event he or she wants to help on their social media accounts. In the article, “The Athletes as Agent of Change,” by Lonnie Bunch and David Skorton states in paragraph 3, “The institution has also been used to prove the worthiness of a marginalized group and prod the nation to live up to its stated ideals.” Living up to the Constitution, is respectfully “asking” the country…
Figueroa’s framework is a tool that investigates the issues surrounding access, equity and equality in sport and physical activity (Grace Lutheran College, 2015). The five separate levels: individual, interpersonal, institutional, structural and cultural are areas used to investigate the ways in which inequities challenge the area of sport and physical activity (Grace Lutheran College, 2015). The individual level is why individuals choose to participate in physical activity whereas the interpersonal level investigates the relationships that affect whether an individual will develop a lifelong association with sport (Wikispaces, 2015). The structural level is the influence of government, business and the media and cultural although the institutional…
In conjunction with the information already obtained and previously mentioned it can be strongly concluded that the Americans with Disabilities Act not only plays a pivotal role in American society but it is also a vital part of our national and international sports society. Again there are several areas in the sports world that are affected by the Americans with Disabilities Act but those areas previously mentioned are the most consistent when researching this topic, however there are multiple underlying questions that will require more research along with further investigation for conclusive results to be achieved. In addition to further research, scholars should make a more thorough observation on who is responsible for making sure sport facilities remain ADA compliant once they have been built? If in fact there is an organization, or person, how do they go about making sure sports facilities are maintaining ADA compliance?…

As I watched the video, thoughts of astonishment and pride ran through my head. The video protrayed a nine year old school boy called Ezra Frech using sport to overcome his disability and having a mature and positive state of mind about his disability. Initially, I felt terribly due to the fact that I branded disabled people as inferior. As the video came to an end, Ezra left an impact on me saying that his disability led him to build confidence and to be strong.…
I am a young ambitious student who strives to excel in everything I do. I want to study Sport Psychology as I know I possess the right skills to further and develop myself in the career of sports. I have the ability to understand others in sports as I also play sports myself. I have been in high pressured sporting situations which I have used my psychological skills to help increase my performance. Chicago Bears vs. Seattle Seahawks Today the National Football League seems to be the hot bed of social issues. Every time I turn on the television another football player has struck again. Our society is run by money, power, and status. One of the monsters and leading powerhouses in our society is none other than the NFL.…
Visualization is a mental image or you imagining what you are going to do. Mental imagery is often used by athletes to improve their skills. Used correctly, it can maintain good health and even help you perform better in sports. Performing an event in the mind creates the neural patterns to teach our muscles to do exactly what we want them to do. Mental imagery needs to be practiced regularly.…
In the course of recent years, there has been a national civil argument with respect to whether school and professional sports organizations should utilize Native American symbolism as their mascots, monikers, and additionally logos. At a base, there are two clashing perspectives: (1) Keeping this symbolism respects Native American individuals, underpins nostalgic emotions, and spares financing; and (2) Keeping this symbolism is hostile and debasing in light of the fact that it is honored to Native Americans and propagates negative stereotypes. Supporters contend these pictures are complimentary, not "harmful," and are not disrespectful to every single Native American. Individuals in resistance refer to research that demonstrates enduring negative…
There are many different instances that we can look at, to see where sports have been a catalyst in social and political change. The first instance that I have noticed in the sport world is the recent actions of NFL player, Colin Kaepernick. Colin Kaepernick expressed his opinions on how African Americans were being treated in the United States, through kneeling during the National Anthem at one of his games. This sparked both a social and political change across America. Athletes both African American and Caucasian, who felt the same way, began kneeling during the National Anthem.…
1) Functionalist Theory focuses on the ways that social structures influence action and relationship in the social worlds. Sports are an inspiration because it contributes to an individual and groups by bringing everybody together by sharing cultural values. An example of the functionalist theory is that sports organizations have a hierarchy system where everyone plays a role interconnected from top to bottom. That means everybody from ownership, to coaches, players, and all employees need to co-exist and work together as a cohesive unit. Working together by instituting core values where people respect themselves and others is functional; where as being disruptive will have negative influences that is dysfunctional.…
