Listening to support or help others or Supportive Listening
Definition and Discussion:
In its smaller form or level it’s a way for Individuals to support others through a balanced formula of attentive, calm, connected and non-directive listening. For listeners, it’s a healthy way to support others without the draining or giving out of their own emotional balance the that can often go with supportive interactions or incidents. This type of listening allows those speaking to receive the support they seek while the listeners gain the practice of putting others above themselves without giving large, sometimes bothersome, responses that can disturb the receiver.
At a broader or more inclusive level, it’s a philosophy that says that people are best suited by finding their own answers in life, and that a Supportive Listener can help facilitate that process by helping the receiver of the listening to come to their own conclusions or answers. This type of listening is extremely important as it facilitates growth in not only the receiver but also the individual who gives the supportive listening. Faith and I both suffer from the longing that accompanies long distance relationships and the jealousy that accompanies academics.
