This essay concludes this assignment and this semesters mathematics module, when first starting the module I felt that my subject knowledge was adequate taking into account that I am out of practise by 4 years. When attending the seminars I quickly realised that I had to revise certain areas of subject knowledge in order to be able to have better practice, and I now have a greater understanding of effective pedagogy. This piece of work shows that although these students may possess many great features such as being intelligent, respectful and hardworking, all the effects are not so positive. Students should be respectful but not be afraid to challenge their authoritative figures, they should not be forced to learn a variety of things against their will nor be walked through life instead of being independent, and if they do have to learn certain subjects then they should also be taught how to build character. My observation of Ms. de la Fuente’s 5th grade class this week started after lunch during their math time. On Wednesday, their schedule had been different from normal and there was two other teachers in the classroom teaching them about different types of rocks. On Thursday, a sixth grade math teacher came to the classroom to further explain what they had been learning about conversions, and to tell them about what they would learn next year when they went to sixth grade.. Most students people that the modern form of education is the only way to be successful in the real world but they do not realize how the standardization of going through the modern educational system is affecting their mental capacities and limitations. Most students do not realize the real reason to learn and they believe that scoring well on a test is considered knowing the material enough to have mastered it. Throughout my career, I have taught a wide array of classes, ranging from remedial mathematics to AP Calculus. In my classroom, I integrate authentic real-world contexts in order to prepare them to use mathematics beyond the classroom: throwing “basketball” paper wads to determine the best mathematical model, performing “Function Aerobics” as the graphs shift, and measuring football lights outside using trigonometry. In “Geometry Store Geometry”, my students explored the surface area and volume of various food items. Using this knowledge, students designed packages to maximize profit while at the same time reducing cost. By building projects, experimenting with ideas, making mistakes, and persevering through problems, my students are learning real mathematics rather than procedures.…
