Qualifications of a Stoma Care Specialist In order to use the title "stoma care nurse specialist" it is recommended that the specialist nurse be educated in stoma care nursing to an advanced level, including stoma care, nurse prescribing and physical examination (WCET UK, 2010).
According to WCET-UK (2010), the qualifications of a stoma care specialist in preparation for practice can be categorized into two: essential and desirable. An essential qualification is possessing or is working towards a relevant degree level education (e.g. stoma qualification Level 3 (or 6) or equivalent). Significant findings included association of higher confidence in ostomy care knowledge (k) and skills (s) with being a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) (p < 0.0001 [k], p = 0.003 [s]); duration of nursing experience (p = 0.01 [k], p = 0.009 [s]) and having ostomy training (p = 0.002 [k], p = 0.02 [s]).
