Testosterone is a hormone that makes men, and even some women who participate in taking them, grow facial hair, get enlarged muscles, and have a deeper voice. When the steroid gets put inside the body, there is a process in which the magic works. The first step in the whole process is called absorption. Depending on if the drug was used by injection or used by pill, depends on how it works. For now, we will specifically talk about injection. The injection method is when a person uses a needle to inject the drug inside the body. Taking steroids by injection is the faster way for results in most cases. Like most injection shots, they make it so that the fluid of the drug goes straight through the digestive tract and into the bloodstream. Distribution, is the next step in the process. This is where the drug moves through the body in the bloodstream. As the drug moves through the body, it settles and binds with many different types of proteins and cell membranes. While the protein and membrane cells get exposed with this substance, muscle tissue begins to enlarge and enhance strength (“Drug Absorption, Distribution, and Elimination; pharmacokinetics”). Going back to sports, bodybuilding is huge when it comes to taking steroids for obvious reasons. Some people believe that when it comes to high school level athletes, they do not worry about the illicit drugs because they are young, they have daily access to physicians, and have personal trainers and nutritionists that take good enough care for them. It is unfortunate that teenagers, especially those in sports have the same great will to win as the elite athletes that they strive to become, tempting them to use performance enhancing drugs. The teenagers that do not participate in sports may have different motives for participating in steroids. Coming from personal experience in weightlifting, there always seems to be a constant thought that I am not getting the results that I want. Having those thoughts on my own, it would only make sense that many other teenagers are thinking the same way, and might use the help of anabolic steroids to get their “gains” where they expect them to be. Another example on why teenagers will take steroids is the fact that they are all extremely sensitive when it comes to their body. They feel like they need to “fit in” with all the other incredible bodies of their peers. And, of course, using steroids will surely help them get the body that they were training so hard to
