Stephens’s contribution to contemporary music particularly the American musical has been a sensation in many ways. From composing outstanding pieces to influencing people’s participation in music, the composer takes credit for advancing creativity in music in many places across the globe. Even though many people acknowledge the efforts of the composer, few are unaware of his immense contribution to music. An only child, Sondheim’s father, Herbert, was the owner of a dress manufacturing company where his mother, Etta Janet was the chief designer. Within the neighborhood, several changes were taking place in the American society, among them, advances in music as a form of entertainment. To Sondheim, the progress was slow initially because the few artists of the time faced numerous challenges that forced many to engage in music part time. Sondheim showed interest in music at an early age, and began piano lessons as early as seven. As an aspiring artist, a young Sondheim had to overcome a loneliness he found being interested in music. Thanks to his persistence, the young musician managed to engage in activities that prepared him for a career in musical theatre. Such activities included participation in scriptwriting at an early age in school; Sondheim often speaks about his experiences writing while studying at George School.
