Assignment Questions 1. List three things you learned about assessment and measurement in the context of the video discussions. First and foremost, properly conceived assessment is an essential aspect of education. The educational review process and all associated components should be routinely examined to ensure quality as well as make improvements. Because learning is a very complex endeavor, it is important to create measurement instruments that are sufficiently comprehensive and applicable (Gronlund, 2013).…

Chapter Title: Chapter 14 Using Standardized and Standards-Based Tests Summary: This chapter outlines what standardized testing is, how it should be administered, and how it should be scored. Most standardized testing has several criteria when scoring and administrating these tests. The chapter also spoke of the different types of norms such as; national, special group and local norms.…
Authentic assessment practices, permit the educator not only a richer evaluation of students and their capabilities, but they also support and transform the processes of teaching and learning (Sheppard, 3). In making overall assessments about individuals accomplishments, it is necessary to consider not just one performance (even if it is judged by multiple criteria), but a variety of performances over time. Traditional testing, especially standardized testing, minimizes reliability problems by limiting the human element in assessment. One need not be…
Scott 1 Skyler Scott Professor Hoffman ENGL 111 Penny Essay 31 August 2015 If I Could Change any Law Standardized testing is common practice throughout the United States. Standardized testing is used to measure academic achievement. Many people will argue that we need standardized testing. However, standardized tests promote competition, resulting in a ranking of students, schools, and states against one another.…
As stated in the InTASC Model Core Teacher Standards, Standard 6 addresses assessments. The standard states: “The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.” To me, we are constantly challenged in using multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth. By first identifying our student’s learning objectives and content standards we are able to align each assessment to those objectives. Therefore, by using our knowledge of Standard 6, the teacher will integrate the instructional practice to provide immediate feedback to reinforce our student’s learning and to modify instruction were…
Change standardized testing For years there has been an ongoing debate whether there should be standardized testing in schools. The debate lies between whether standardized testing is necessary and an effective part in student learning. I believe that standardized testing is a necessity and it should remain in schools, however, it should be reconstructed in a way that helps students excel academically instead of inhibiting them. Standardized testing can be a great learning tool if used properly. In Order to make sure standardized testing is an efficient tool, changes such as improving time restraints, catering to everyone's need and properly analyzing results of each individual should be put in place.…
The Truth about Standardized Testing “In the course of their careers in the American schools of today, most students take hundreds, if not thousands, of tests. They develop a skill to a highly calibrated degree in an exercise that will essentially become useless immediately after their last day in school.” – Howard Gardner 1991 The NCLB (No Child Left Behind) act was implemented in the year 2001 by President Bush as a way to improve our education system in America. A way that has caused for an over emphasis on testing while holding teachers accountable for those results; thus leading to lecturing and teaching to the test as a way to engage students rather than teaching them what they truly need in life to be successful. The truth is Standardized…
Should schools do standardized testing? The American education system is a rigid and regulated structure that continues to change to meet the demands of the educators. Standardized tests, assessments given to students who are to answer the same questions or range of questions and that are graded in the same form, are a way the test-developers believe will be beneficial for the students and public schools around the United States, but unfortunately this assumption is wrong. With new manners of teaching, students as well as teachers are becoming stressed and are having anxiety as well as other health effects from the overbearing amount of regulated tests.…
To create an accurate standard based curriculum, selection of instructional methods and content after evaluation is required as well as a good understanding of content standards. Content standards should lead all instruction, due to they were created to gradually refined understanding and skill. Selecting content that reflects the student’s interests and needs allows the material to flow with the students’ previous experiences in earlier grades and with the experiences gained outside of the school. Overall to offer student’s a successful, relevant, standard driven program instruction should be a resultant from these four components; assessment driven, student driven, knowledge driven, and community driven. When most people hear assessments, they think of them only as a method for teachers to determine grades.…
The results of standardized tests are used in a variety of ways which can be very beneficial for schools. Using test scores to evaluate teacher performances is equally important as evaluating student performances because teachers can use the scores to observe what content areas and topics need improvement. Based on the test results, teachers can alter the curriculum in order to improve test scores next time around (Tienken, 2015). Standardized test results reflect not only on students, but reflect on the teachers and school districts as well. Therefore, teachers are motivated to teach and participate in support programs that are designed to improve the overall scores of students.…
There is consistently school reform going on in my district, and specifically within my school. My school is currently working on challenging our high achieving students with a focus on implementing more inquiry based lessons and extension of activities. Duke (2013) argues, “For the U.S. to reclaim its position in the forefront of academic achievement, it must pay more attention to its high achievers” (Duke, p. 48). As an educator, my goal is to get my students to achieve in whatever way they are able, not just focusing on passing a standardized assessment. In my classroom, I focus on growth mindset and goal setting (especially discussing attainable and measurable goals).…

Standardized tests are not an accurate measure of a student’s academic abilities. Testing can have many different factors that occur, making it quite inaccurate. Education is a fragile matter that must not be taken lightly. Extensive thought should go into making a child’s education as stress free and effective as possible. High-stake and standardized test need to be used with caution and care in the school system because of the many things they do that eventually lead to the harm of student learning.…
Introduction Pre-assessments, diagnostic assessments, formative assessments, and summative assessments all have their own place in the classroom. They provide teachers with data that informs curriculums, instruction and ultimately additional assessment. The many assessments that teachers use to guide their practices are assessed using a variety of methods. When giving students a performance based assessment, the appropriate grading style is a rubric.…
