Living life to the fullest and looking forward,we all strive to be this person. Bessie Smith made this her life motto and lived it well. Facing hardships and tragedies Bessie Smith still made it in a world against her race and her gender. She spoke for a generation of women about love and loss and what it meant to be an early 1900’s African American woman.…
By the end of the 1940s, Lena had sued a variety of restaurants and theaters for discrimination and became an outspoken member of the leftist group “Progressive Citizens of America.” Racist, McCarthyism was sweeping through Hollywood , and Lena soon found herself blacklisted from film, TV, theater and recording. Lena then performed primarily in “posh and plush nightclubs” around the country. Lena Horne remained active in spite of her being blacklisted, performing at rallies around the country on behalf of the NAACP and the “National Council for Negro Women,” and participated in the 1965 March on Washington.…
In the New York Times article "In Defense of Gender," author Cyra McFadden pleads her case for why the attempts to make the English language gender-neutral have gone too far. Furthermore, she addresses different areas in which gender neutralization has become common, including job titles, last names, and pronoun usage. Ultimately, while she hopes that there will be a resolution to this issue of language leaning towards one gender, she concludes that there must be another way that does not transform the English language into a robotic and sluggish. " In Defense of Gender" takes a humorous look as to why the gender-neutral solutions to the English language make no sense.…
Look in the mirror and see yourself. Your true self. Is this who you really are? Not the type of person everyone is saying you are and shall be. You'll always know who you are because it's instinct.…
"If you have an over-preoccupation with perception and trying to please people’s expectations, then you can go mad." – Benedict Cumberbatch. It is very easy to be preoccupated by people opinion toward oneself. Many people have their life guides by others' opinions of them, and it leads them to some poor choices that will affect their futures. We allow others to have an impact on our self-image because we want to be love, and we want to belong to a social group.…
Kassandra Denniston The Loser- A Stereotypical Love Story Not many people would know me if you said my name and not very many people would say that I am cute or attractive. I didn’t always be this way. Just a year ago I used to be friends with the cheerleaders and I used to know everyone. When I walked down the hall, even if I wasn’t walking with anyone, everyone would say “hey Sandy”.…
Allies and Aliases I am a healer in a mercenary company. I am also an Owl bard with an ego. I am a panda bear with the ability to walk on both water as well as walls. I work together with my allies from different worlds, from the towering leader of the vanguard to the small farm boy with the ability to change probability, and go on adventures beyond our wildest dreams. I used to work in a group of thieves and later became the daughter of a Viking warrior.…
Every once and a while you go off course. In this journal, I will learn how to do scripts that will help me achieve my present success. You have friends, family, society and yourself. Everything else is just parts of it, religion, work, emotion, drama, all just branches to the four larger trunks. At least that's what I think. Of course, I'm just a teenager, a dramatic, hormonal, self-centered teenager. Or at least what society thinks of me, a stereotype.…
The song “invisible” talks about how some people don’t have the stuff we have or their lifestyle is different,so we treat them different than others. Here is my evidence for my claim,”Crowded hallways are the loneliest places for outcasts and rebels or anyone who just dares to be different and you've been trying for so long to find out where your place is,but in their narrow minds there's no room for anyone who dares to do something different. ”So we as people should treat the people that have a different lifestye than us better. Most people judge by the stuff you have or the way you live but most of the time they never judge you by your personality or your actions to others. Here is my evidence,”So your confidence is quiet,To them quiet looks…
Growing up I have always been profiled as someone that doesn’t go to school, gets terrible grades and that I am an overall rude person. The first day of school most people won’t talk very much unless you know someone. We play games to get to know one another and once we get past that awkward part and it has been a few weeks and everyone is more comfortable or we have made friends, I eventually learn that before I even talked to these people and learned that I am there for them. They tell me I’m nothing they had thought, I’m not as rude as I look and they see that I barley miss school and that I absolutely hate to miss a class.…
Do you remember being called ugly just because you don't fit society's definition of beautiful? Do you remember being called dumb just because your opinion doesn't match theirs? Well, I do, but I have realized that all you need is confidence; Confidence to express, not to impress. Confidence is a must in today’s society.…
Professionalism I think the word professionalism means behaving in a way that is in accordance with the etiquette that is to be followed by a group of people in a certain environment. As for what I think employers mean by the word professionalism is that the employees are to go about their job or their tasks with seriousness and honesty. I think that employers feel that professionalism in the workplace aids in achieving the company’s goal in an efficient manner. An example of a time when I had to act professionally would have been when I was doing my internship abroad.…
Does society glamorize your weight and despise it at the same time? “You’re soooooo skinny!!!!” “UHHH, you’re just body goals!!” “You’re too bony.” These are only a couple of the lines that allude to my body image on a day to day basis.…
Ever since I could remember, I have always kept to myself, I never wanted to be in large groups, I never got out of this shell of mine that I’ve been hidden in for years. Everything was almost within my comfort zone, I never dared to venture out and put myself “out there.” I was always at content at where I was until I had to completely change how I dealt with social situations. During my middle school years I went to W.H. Oliver Middle School, which was zoned for Overton.…
