The novel is set in pre-Partition India in Lahore. It investigates the Partition as a consequence of fundamentalism ignited by communal disharmony. Sidhwa shows us that the Partition left even normal people and friends insane, vulnerable and ineffective. Sidhwa has foregrounded in her novel a number of socio-political issues pertaining to the Partition as it is the chief theme of her novel.
