She turned out to be right. As Bolkovac investigated deeper, more and more Bosnian investigators and sex trafficking victims came forward with what they knew. The evidence suggested that American and other international contractors were having sex with underage trafficking victims or even buying them outright. Some of the men weren’t even hiding it.
It was increasingly difficult for anything to get done about this because the corruption was so far up. When she wrote reports to her superiors, either they were ignored or dismissed as solved although the details of the solution were never shared with her. She and fellow members of the international peace core were effectively free from prosecution. Eventually Bolkovac was fired for her in depth investigations.
Political corruption is a terrible thing. You can’t trust the people who are supposed to keep you safe because they are the ones who are participating in the crime. Those that aren’t part of the crime wont report it for fear that they will tell the wrong person and get fired. And the legislature will not do anything about it because they’re involved in the crime
