They organized a huge voter registration drive in Mississippi. Members of the SNCC went from door to door encouraging people to cast their votes. Some other civil rights groups at the time were The SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference) and The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). Some civil rights leaders were Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, Medgar Evers and John Lewis. The SNCC was considered different from all the other civil rights groups because they used participatory democracy. For example, they would have meetings where anyone was free to make a speech or simply just talk about any issue for as long as they wanted. The meeting was not over until everyone was on the same accord about everything that was said. The SNCC inspired many young people to not only to join them but to join the overall movement. Some are positive and some are negative. You could say that the SNCC’s strategy was ineffective. If you said that, you would be totally wrong. It is obvious that the SNCC’s strategies were very effective and that they really affected the movement in a very positive way. Some may say they were too radical. Well, they were radical, but in a way that really helped them gain ground in the fight for civil rights. It has even been said that the only thing they did was make people angry and annoyed!
