Sleeping is essential to a person’s schedule. Without sleep some people can hardly function properly on a day to day basis due to lack of sleep. Insomnia is when a person has trouble falling asleep. Insomnia has many factors such as technology, stress, preoccupied, napping throughout the day, etc. Having a poor sleeping environment can also cause someone to have difficulty falling asleep. Room temperature, noises, light, or a hard or too soft of a bed can all effect Insomnia. Narcolepsy is a chronic disorder that can be inherited and is caused when a person falls asleep unexpectedly or suddenly. “Narco” means numbness and “lepsy” stands for seizure (Matzen, 2016). Someone with Narcolepsy can be having a conversation, playing a sport, or sitting in class and suddenly fall asleep. Narcolepsy can be very dangerous if an affected person is driving or working with tools and has a sleep attack. Sleep attacks can often last as long as fifteen to thirty minutes depending on the person. The average sleep attack last as long as two minutes (Matzen, 2016). “Narcolepsy effects as many as 100,000 people in the United States and seems to run in families” (Rathus, 2016). Sleep paralysis is a dangerous symptom of Narcolepsy because it is accompanied by the collapse of different muscle groups. Cataplexy occurs when a narcoleptic has strong emotions or breaks out in laughter causing the person to have muscle weakness and collapses while still in consciousness (Hypersomnia Foundation, 2015). Insomnia and Narcolepsy- Cataplexy can all be treated by certain stimulants and antidepressant drugs (Rathus, 2012). Treatments for sleep orders are normally fixed by modern medicine and making lifestyle adjustments such as a strict sleep schedule.
