It is said that they arrived about 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. These people lived a wide range of lifestyles while developing many different languages and beliefs along the way. By the time the 1400s hit North America was the home too many different tribes and civilizations. Out of all the immigrants that came to North America 250,000 came from Africa but where slaves. Slavery first began in 1619 where the first African slaves were brought from Jamestown to North America. It was approximately 20 Africans that were sold into slavery. So why were these slaves brought to North America? They brought over the slaves to help the colonist farm their crop and to use them on their cotton farms. They did this because colonist felt that the farming was too hard for them and it also meant cheap labor for the slaves. Soon after this happened Massachusetts became the first colony to legalize slavery then, Virginia, Connecticut, New York, Maryland and more. It was when the anti slavery Whigs had began meeting in the upper Midwestern states to discuss their formation of the new party. They quickly got their followers in the north and in 1856 their first presidential candidate John C Freemont won 11 of the northern states. Another thing I learned that stuck out to me was Dred Scott v. Sanford also known as the Dred Scott case. This case was one of the events that lead up to the American civil war. It was up to the Supreme Court to make their decision. This case was brought up by Dred Scott he was an African American slave who lived in a free state with his owner. He wanted to sue for him his wife and daughters’ freedom. Dred Scott was denied the court ruled 7-2 and the court found that no lack free slave could claim U.s citizenship so he was unable to petition the court for his freedom. America reacted very strongly to this decision. This also led to the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 that beat out Stephen Douglas, Breckenridge and John Bell. It is said that this caused the civil war in 1861, trade tariffs as well as the free and slave states over the power to prohibit slavery in certain territories.
