The idea of slavery was taken to the extreme when people began to think about getting rid of the idea of having indentured servants, which you would release after so many years on their contract, to having slaves who you bought and never released. They lived in little shacks that they had to build themselves to stay out of the elements and were given limited clothing. In some instances, slaves were given clots may be once or twice a year and were given shoes, depending on where they lived, in the winter time. If they disobeyed their master, they were beaten and made an example for wat would happen to others if they did the same. There were many instances where slave tried to run away from their plantations to the north, Native American territory, or Spanish territory. Sometimes if they were captured or returned, they were killed to make an example of what would happen if anyone else tried to escape. Abolitionists were people that opposed slavery and tried to help slaves escape to safe places where slaves could hide and try to be free. One of the most famous ones was Harriet Tubman, whom was a freed slave that was one of the leaders of the Underground Railroad where slaves that were trying to escape were moved from home to home to the safe places. For the abolitionists it wasn’t about equal rights between a white man and a colored man, it was trying to tear down slavery for what it was and what it did. With all the bad stuff that is included with slavery, there is at least one positive throughout the entire mess. Slavery was able to help boost the economy by being able to get more of the raw material needed into factories and then from factories to consumer that would buy the product. It was a continuous cycle that kept money flowing throughout the banks and country.
